SailTimer app

A picture is worth 1000 words...

Overview of how to use SailTimer (v. 1).

Tacking lines can now be overlays on the map (v. 2).

New Features in SailTimer (v. 2.5.2)...

Part 1. Enter the directions of the wind and destination, either with exact degrees or the handy wheel of main compass points. That alone gives you the optimal tacking angles. This clip also shows pins being set on the aerial photo from Google Maps for the current position and for waypoints, and how to move the pins before saving or renaming. (Note:  Although the Lite version of the SailTimer app is mentioned in this clip, the Lite version is no longer available. Most people preferred getting all of the features, not just the Lite version.)

Part 2. This clip shows some of the new features in the most recent version of the full SailTimer app. From your current position, specify a rhumb line distance and see the optimal tacking angles overlaid on the map and to get the tacking distances. Enter the boatlength (LWL) to get the hullspeed or maximum speed for your boat. Add the wind speed and now you can also see the Tacking Time to Destination (TTD).

Part 3. Additional features and capabilities: You can select a waypoint to Go To, and see how far away it is, the tacking distances and Tacking Time to Destination (TTD). There is also a large knotmeter display for speed in the full version. As you will see, SailTimer can even be used on an iPod or iPhone inside a waterproof DryPak, for protection in the marine environment while aboard. The touchscreen works right through the soft waterproof case.
